Hot Stone Massage

Hot Stone Massage is a wonderful way of enhancing the traditional Swedish massage techniques of Effleurage and Petrissage.

The hot stones can be used in several ways, producing a wonderful sense of relaxation and well-being, following a 60 minute full body massage (including neck, back, shoulders, arms and legs) . Alternatively, the hot stones can be used on specific areas of the body to ease muscular knots, or myofascial trigger points, and to release and relax localised soft tissue/ fascial stiffness.

Hot stone massage can be used to treat persistent pain, anxiety, sub-acute or chronic swelling, muscle spasm, rheumatism, stiffness and soft tissue congestion. The benefits of using Hot stones include:

  • Relaxation of fascial contractures associated with myofascial dysfunction.

  • Increasing fascial pliability, helping to relieve muscle stiffness and spasm.

  • Stimulation of the sensory nerves of the skin and autonomic nervous system.

  • A reduction in pain perception.

  • Stimulation of the lymphatic system, circulatory system and metabolism.

  • Facilitating a feeling of well-being and relaxation following massage.

Hot And Cold Stone Treatment

Additionally, hot stones can be contrasted with cold stones (rapid massage strokes using alternating hot and cold stones for three minutes each) to invigorate the sensory nerves of the skin  and autonomic nervous system, increase local blood flow and metabolism within the fascia.

Cold Stone Treatment

Used on their own, cold stones can reduce pain & swelling, associated with injury, and reduce muscle soreness associated with unaccustomed exercise (delayed onset muscle soreness or DOMS).

Cold stones also stimulate the sensory nerves of the skin and autonomic nervous system, reducing local tissue metabolism, soothing away tension and refreshing the senses.

Precautions

There are some instances when hot and cold stone techniques are not advised or when extra care may need to be taken. Please inform me at the time of booking your treatment if you are pregnant or have any  medical/ skin conditions or have had recent surgery.
